A hard No GenAI policy would be much appreciated. I lost a lot of interest talking, reading, and sharing ideas and projects here. I see little point in allowing generative AI in this space. The goal of this forum is to explore systems designed for people, built with them in mind. I see LLMs as a systemic failure of building tools for people to use (especially at the scale of an individual with scraps of time (hi, that’s us these days)). Their usage within a project constitutes the its conclusion. A conclusion which is “the project has failed”, and, at most, we should write a postmortem on the project.

GenAI for building a HCI system indicates one of three things (which are not mutually exclusive):

- The project is too large to maintained at the available level of resources.
  - It is no different than existent systems. Why should I not just one of those more established things?
  - If the developer can’t maintain it, then it is too big for me to do the same and may be too hostile for me to modify. The point of malleable systems is to empower their users.

- The project’s developer is no longer interested in building the tool.
  - If the developer is uninterested, how on earth can I become interested? These tools are all exploratory, I would be interfacing with the developers much more than say C#, Rust, OCaml, or any established fully matured tool.
  - If this tool is meant to be a substrate, what point is there in me looking under its hood? The substrate itself is nothing but statistical machine output massaged into the desired shape. There is nothing here for me to understand nor mold.

- The project is not design for people at all, but a text generator.
  - What’s the point of me using this instead of the slop directly? Seriously. If I was a person into GenAI, why would I use your tool and not just ask Claude Whatever 5.6 to make my own bespoke version? You tool is simply disposable.
  - I am already sounded by tools that assume you are a DevOps team or paying for a CI/CD service or running a whole supercharged IDE, why should I just use those established tools?

Thus, a project using GenAI is a tool for nobody, made by nobody, that changes nothing. It is simply another product trying to race to market. And, there is already enough of that.

I’ll spare the mental health hazard these system pose and the myriad of politics they bring with them. [I have already written everything I could possible say on that one](https://www.sheeeeeeeep.art/software-in-current-era.html), and this post is rather long.
