Characters on a grid are super easy to navigate, even for a kid. You just move around, overwrite, and change things. Everything stays where you put it. If you have bitmap or vector graphics and variable-pitch text, suddenly you need a whole grid-like or table-like mechanism for laying out and spacing elements

This is a perennial trade-off, and I see people argue for both sides..
